Not only that: when the Rājasūya sacrifice was being held, Kṛṣṇa entered Hastināpura, went to Dharmaja and asked, ‘Dharmaja! In this great sacrifice, give Me some service to do.’ Then Dharmaja: ‘Why, there is no work here at all that You could do. If You tell me what You can do, I will certainly give it to You,’ he said. Then Kṛṣṇa went up close, stroked Dharmaja's back and: ‘Cousin! Don't you know anything of My degree? I have passed My M.A. So if you give Me work that fits it, I will certainly do it,’ He said. In those days Dharmaja knew nothing at all of what an M.A. was. In those days there were no colleges like these. Dharmaja, all flustered: ‘Svāmī! As for this M.A., can You tell me what it is worth? Then I will give You what fits it. I do not understand,’ he said. M: eṅgili ākulu, the used leaf plates; A: ettivēyaṭamu, clearing them away. ‘Clearing away the used leaf plates: that is what My M.A. degree is worth,’ He said. That is, the leaves people had eaten from looked rather unsightly there, and because of that people lose a little of their cheer; so, to give them cheer, Kṛṣṇa took away what was of no further use and set about this effort, to let their citta bathe in Ānanda. So a clean place is something attractive to man. A pure citta in man is attractive to God.
Outer cleanliness, inner cleanliness: when we make this outer cleanliness a habit, we set about developing inner cleanliness. Not only that: besides cleaning our surroundings, we must do some service so that the cittas of the people around us, too, reach a state full of Ānanda. When others meet with any troubles, when illness comes upon them, when adversities befall them, we must set about cooling them with our service, as far as is at all in our power. Service can be done not only through a deed; it can be done through a word too. With a good word we can calm their hearts. With good speech we can make them glad. With good things to talk of we can make them forget their troubles. Good words too are like a service. Because those who are leaders do not set about this today, our world is falling into confusion through certain hardships.
