In plain words
When we strengthen the faith that He Himself is everything, everything will surely come to us. So you have no authority to decide, ‘This is good, that is bad.’ Your feeling always holds that a deed against your wish is very bad and that what suits you is very good. But your good and bad are known to God alone; you do not understand them at all. So, whether bad happens or good happens, it is the best path for us to regard it all as for my good, a gift of grace God has granted. So you must not let every single feeling that rises in you flare up. To some extent you must keep from stirring it up. If you press those feelings down and stay calm, thinking, ‘This is not right at this moment,’ you will surely gain a fitting fruit for it in the future.
Good Qualities Alone Count
For you who are young, mastery of the senses is most necessary. You must not toil after the body's good looks. You must set about shaping your qualities to be beautiful, natural and true in their very form. Only where there are good qualities is there a place; where the body is, there is no place. Without good qualities, however much strength you have, however much bodily strength, this turns into nothing but a life of disgrace; it cannot reach a place of honour. To a person with plenty of wealth and no good qualities, anyone who sees him may say some ordinary ‘Namaskāram, Sir’; but once outside, they do not regard such a man with any respect at all. We must not set any store at all by the honour and respect given to our body. We must set about seeking only the place given to the heart.
This morning Gokak spoke well about the sacrifices of Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave, about the good works they did for the world, and about the ways of effort by which they won freedom in a spirit of forbearance. It is most necessary to sacrifice our life for the country. To shape well, to some extent, the welfare of the country, the happiness of the people and the state of society: this too is our duty.
