In plain words
But with this alone our life does not take on its full form. Keeping the goal in God, sending this body out into the world, and rendering service to society so that our karmas become karmas done for the pleasure of God: in that there is great sacredness. There are very many great souls who kept the country alone as their goal and served the country. But such names end up as writing written on water. Lal, Pal and Bal: all of them made great sacrifices for the country. Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bipin Chandra Pal: the three made great sacrifices for the world. That must certainly be granted. But how far their names are current in the world today, you can consider for yourselves. The names of those who served keeping merely the country as their only goal go on fading little by little. Yet the name of Bal Gangadhar Tilak alone still lasts a long time: what is the reason? Because he set about translating the sacred Vedas, because he offered his life to some extent on the divine path, his name has been able to last a long time still. So, rather than our thinking of service only within physical life, there is far more meaning in bringing the spiritual into that physical too and serving the physical world. However powerful the current, if merely the positive flows by itself, it is no use. There must be the negative too. Only when negative and positive join is the current useful. However good the condition that machine is in, without current it is a lump of iron. So the world is like a negative to us. Only when both negative and positive join does the world give us the fruit called happiness and joy. Jayadeva, Gaurāṅga, Kabīr, Rāmadāsu, Tulasīdās, Rāmakṛṣṇa Paramahaṃsa, and not only these but Śuka, Vālmīki, Vyāsa, who have come down from time without beginning: what is the reason that the names of such great souls, embodiments of that negative and positive, stand where, however many generations change, there is no chance of their names changing too? Because they joined themselves to this Divinity, their names stand for ever in this world. So we must serve the world and become worthy of the grace of the Lord of the world.
