Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Of Dharma, Artha, Kāma and Mokṣa, Dharma and Artha are the one, Kāma and Mokṣa the second. Once we have divided them into two, our life truly becomes blessed. When we make the division that Artha is for the sake of Dharma and Kāma for the sake of Mokṣa, there is no room either for any confusion or for straying from the road. But today man takes it to be his duty to waste his whole life for the sake of Artha. No, no. When, for it to become fruitful, we use Artha on the path of Dharma, build up to some extent the merit of our births upon births and destroy our sin, a chance also arises for us to become worthy of the grace of the divine Ātma. This thing called wealth is in keeping with both, Mokṣa and Prakṛti. We fancy that Artha is the support for being happy here and for being happy hereafter. In its use, if it is put to use in the proper way, it gives joy in the right way. That very thing, if we turn it onto a crooked path, brings our life not only unrest but danger as well. We must not think of this word Dharma as having come into being only to set the world in a state of equality, or else for the progress of society. Holding to our Bhāratīya culture, and to this too, that to use it in the divine Ātma-principle, in the equality that is oneness, is what makes it fruitful, Dharma set about bestowing an Ātma-principle that is a kind of equality. Here is a small example of this. In one place we see a deep pit, and right beside it we see a mound of earth. There seems to be so much difference between the pit there and the mound here. When that mound is put into the pit in the ground, the pit too comes to an even level. In the same way, the rich man is like a high mound. The poor man is like a deep pit. But with the thought that if we move that mound rightly into this pit, there will be a chance for humanness, which is equality, to grow, our Bhāratīyas brought in the sacred path called dāna and dharma. The building that is the mansion of our Bhārata rests on four mothers: Mother Earth, Mother Veda, Mother Cow and the mother who gave us our body.
