In plain words
You must give thanks to such a mother. You must give thanks to the father who nurtured you, brought you up, had you given learning and good sense, and made fitting provision for you. That such a sacred human birth comes to us is the blessing of the great ṛṣis; so you must give thanks to them. The One who is the root and support of everything is God. So you must give thanks to God. A small example. In our land of Bhārata there used to be paśubali. There was also what was called bhūtabali. Bali: when we look at it closely in its worldly sense, we take it to mean doing harm. Bali means a tax. Now every human being pays a tax for current. We pay a tax for water, we pay a tax for roads. If you ask why we pay such taxes: since they have brought within our reach the current that was somewhere out of reach, there is a tax for it. Since they have brought within reach water that lay somewhere far beyond our reach, a tax. In the same way, bhūtabali means this: the gods all developed sacred humanness in us, gave us humanness, and set us in a sacred birth such as this; so, that we may gain the Ānanda that is beyond even their reach, the happiness beyond their reach, the state of heaven that cannot be attained, making all the sādhanas we do a tax to God was called bhūtabali. That is, its right meaning is simply offering it to God. So every human being wants happiness, joy, Śānti and Ānanda. For this Ānanda, our sādhana is the tax. For our happiness, prayer is the tax. For our comfort, our dhyāna is the tax. Giving all these like a tax, and offering Him good conduct, good thoughts, good reflection and good qualities, all of these, in order to gain the Ānanda called Saccidānanda, Nityānanda, Brahmānanda, Yogānanda, Paramānanda, Advaitānanda, which lies very far from us, in order to gain them. So whatever we ask for, we cannot escape paying for it. So, for this birth that has come to us, the elders all laid down these sacred paths, that we might offer God our wholehearted Śaraṇāgati and enjoy sacred Ānanda from Him.
