In plain words
But all our activities have to do only with the gross form. Through this gross form we have to carry out many good deeds. This itself can be called a kind of jīva-prajñā. This is the activity of the gross form. Then the principle of the guṇas, which are the subtle form: this itself can also be called Īśvara-prajñā. That is, of these guṇas, many kinds rise up in us, spring from the seat of our heart, and in the end set about binding the gross body, these guṇas. When we shape these guṇas into sacred guṇas, we become free of bondage and reach the Ānanda of being free. When these guṇas take a somewhat crooked path, these very guṇas become the cause of certain kinds of bondage, and our life falls into hardship in a state of confusion. Bad qualities seem to us to give pleasure and Ānanda for a while, but in the future they set about bringing great harm and great dangers as well. They come and join us as friends and turn into enemies. These same ones look to us like lords and turn into thieves. So at this age we must make a fitting effort to see that such bad qualities do not reach the seat of our heart. Company too helps somewhat toward good qualities and bad qualities. Whatever people we join, those very people's ways grow in us. A small example. When fire catches one stick in some forest, that stick not only burns up itself; it does not stop until it has burned to ashes the sticks or the trees around it. A bad quality is like fire. “When a wildfire flares up in a forest, will it burn the neem trees and pass the mango trees by?” they said. In the same way, when these wicked people come near, they not only ruin themselves; they set about bringing those who crowd round, their own relatives, their own friends, into certain kinds of disgrace, into hardship, into sorrow. Then satsaṅga means people who not only sacrifice themselves but set about giving sacred things to all. They are like an incense stick. The incense stick goes on burning and burning, and even though it is itself destroyed, it gives a sacred fragrance to those gathered round and to those far away and brings them comfort.
