In plain words
Only those who have such firm resolve are worthy of God's Grace!
Today some people reject the very divinity of Īśvara, make up arguments against it, and spread them about. It is no wonder that through them faith in God is wasting away. The husband who does not trust his wife, the wife who does not trust her husband, the son who does not trust his father, the father who does not trust his son, the disciple who does not trust his guru, the guru who does not trust his disciple: in this age, when these very people are the many, there is nothing at all to wonder at if the people who do not trust Īśvara are growing in number.
Embodiments of the Divine Ātma! The power of Buddhi is beyond all else. In the Gītā Śrī Kṛṣṇa declared, “I am Buddhi itself”; and He said, “Dadāmi buddhi yogaṃ taṃ.” Through Buddhi the wavering Manas can be shaped and set right. If you trust in this and take to the path of sādhana, you can surely conquer Manas.
Revealing the principle of Īśvara, Śrī Kṛṣṇa said, “Samohaṃ sarvabhūteṣu”! For Him there is neither anger nor Grace; joy and sorrow, bondage and Mokṣa, birth and death: these the jīvas themselves are earning through their own karmas. But a doubt may arise in you: has not God declared, “Paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṃ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtāṃ”? “Why does He set some apart as good and gladden them with blessings, and why does He drive others away as wicked and punish them? Are these not proof of anger and of Grace?” you may ask. But once you accept that all things arose in Himself alone, would all the feelings of difference still arise? The body is our very own, the hand is our very own, the fingers are our very own, and the nails on those fingers are our very own too! Yet we cut the nails on our fingers, do we not? Though the stomach is our own, we cannot avoid voiding the waste and urine within it. If we do not, it is the body itself that comes to harm through disease. In some circumstances, to cure a disease, we have to undergo even an operation. To give it up, saying that operations will surely bring pain, is not right; that is not the mark of a discerning person. To be rid of sorrow, you simply have to go through that passing sorrow. By that means doctors do us nothing but good, not harm! When the cancerous sore called the Kauravas broke out on the body called the universe, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the doctor, took Arjuna as His compounder, performed the operation called the Kurukṣetra war, brought about the welfare of the world, and revealed His power of action and His compassionate nature.
As long as you are sunk in the vāsanās of the senses, you cannot settle which is good and which is bad; Manas by its nature has no such power of discrimination. If you develop Buddhi, gain purity of citta and cultivate good character, then little by little the feeling free of envy grows firm; the Divinity that is your true svarūpa shines forth. When man looks on all jīvas as one, he can come wholly close to God.
