In plain words
In the Prema of parents, a selfishness in which a little mamatā shows creeps in and pollutes it; parents too may come to hate their children and keep them away; friends and relatives may drift away. When the tank is full of water, frogs gather round it by the crore. Once the tank dries up, not even one is to be seen. In the same way, so long as there are money and gold, goods and vehicles, friends and relatives gather round; but once all these are gone, they all run off. But the One who keeps close at all times and guards like the eyelid is the Paramātma alone! The Lord of the universe alone, whose very form is Prema!
All of you have gathered here from many regions, bearing many hardships, in the hope of seeing Swami and attaining the goal of life. But Swami's aim is that, rather than outer sādhanas, all of you should develop inner vision as time goes on.
In My view there is no such feeling at all as “I am the guru, you are the disciples”; once it is said that oneness alone exists everywhere and at all times, who then is the guru? Who are the disciples? He himself is the guru! He himself is the disciple! To think of them as separate comes from Ajñāna alone! Does a man become a guru the moment he has taught a few mantras? Does this man become a disciple the moment he has received some upadeśa? Both are a portion of the Divine! In both, the principle of the Ātma is one and the same! To be proud that the guru's status is high and to be cast down that the disciple's status is low: neither holds. We must keep neither pride nor dejection.
God is in the bad and in the good alike. Think how much joy you have when just one body is healthy, sound and strong! So, if you grow the broad feeling, “All these bodies are mine,” strive for the health, strength and contentment of all bodies, and yourself receive their joy, what ease! What contentment! What happiness! Think: then you also get the chance to worship and rejoice in the universal Virāṭ-svarūpa. “One place, one form.” To think so is very narrow, very petty. If you confine the Paramātma within such limits, it is as good as dishonouring His glory! We must not think of Him as small in form; we must think of Him only as the universal Virāṭ-svarūpa. To argue, “My Swami, my pūjā, my Swami in my pūjā room, your Swami in your pūjā room,” is wrong. God is the inner Ātma of all beings, so you too must set about receiving the joy of all beings. You must try to live without hurting, harming or reviling anyone.
Grow the feeling of Prema, and pray to God every day, wholeheartedly, “Lokās samastā sukhino bhavantu.” This is My Guru Pūrṇimā message.
