Passage 3

In plain words

You must prove your Bhakti, your faith and your śraddhā in deeds. You must not waste time in talk. We can tell good from bad only by the experience our actions bring. To look at, water and pānakam are both the same. When you drink them, the difference becomes clear. Only when you experience Ānanda do you understand it.

Those who think themselves sādhakas, who enter the turmoil of worldly troubles and losses, get caught in the vāsanās of the senses and stuff their heads with everything that is of no use, stay where they are and go no further. Purity of heart is nowhere to be seen. Matchsticks that have fallen into water and got wet: however many times you strike them, what use is it? The whole box is spoilt. That is all. How can a Manas filled with the vāsanās of the senses show forth the supreme Light?

We must cultivate a broad Prema. We must give up selfishness. We must crush Ahaṅkāra. Even great souls, the elders among men, meet hardships and losses of many kinds, blame, harsh words, sufferings and abuse. This is the way of the world. Without these, the fame of those holy persons could not grow. The world may not recognise them. If you call a sugar cane and ask it for jaggery, will it give it? Even a diamond of the finest kind does not shine unless it is ground on the stone. Jesus, Śaṅkara, Madhvācārya, Rāmānujācārya, Jayadeva, Gaurāṅga, Mīrā, Sakkubāī, those who came into the world in Western lands and those of Bhārata: not one of them escaped hardships and torments. They are all creepers that bear flowers full of fragrance. Unless you ‘cut’ them now and then, the flowers do not come in plenty. Whatever anyone may say or do, you must not lose your faith, your sacred Bhakti. From now on put away your old feelings, grow new and sacred ones in the field of your heart, nourish them, and relish Ānanda. I bless you all, wishing every one of you happy life, long life, useful life, divine life.
