In plain words
Why should a village have a temple? It is this: as the heart is the support of our body, so the temple is the mainstay of the village. A body without a heart and a village without a temple are of no use. That is why we have built a new building for our village today. Gather in it every day when evening comes, all of you, and remember the Name of God. Even if we do no service, give no gifts in charity, perform no rites such as yajña and yāga, I hope that you will take up the fitting effort to be saved through remembering the Name. To depend on the government for everything, or to depend on officials, can never be man's duty. We have two legs. We have two hands. We have one stomach. If we work well with the two hands to fill the one stomach, nothing at all will stand in the way of filling our stomach. So today we are moving away from work and drawing close to words. We cannot accomplish tasks by words. I hope that we will do deeds, enter the path of karma, take up the vow of karma, stand as lives of tyāga, and attain a fruitful divinity for the nation, for the village and for life too. Above all, all the people of the villages must be united. Whatever differences there may be, the Ātma in all is one. Recognising the Satya that the divine Godhead is one alone, you must make a fitting effort to give no room to any anger, any jealousy, any envy, not to nurse feuds, not to nurse hatreds, to live through Prema and with Prema, to achieve your tasks with Prema, and with Prema itself to reach Him who is the embodiment of Prema. For God is the embodiment of Prema. God, the embodiment of Prema, we must attain through Prema alone; there is no other way by which we can attain Him. If we want to see the moon, we cannot see it by holding up a torch light, or a hurricane lantern, a Petromax light or an electric bulb. It is only by the moon's own light that we have to see the moon. In just the same way, with Prema alone as our support, we have a fine chance to attain the embodiment of Prema. It is an easy path. I hope that through such Prema we will drive out, by remembering the Name, the bad qualities within us such as anger and torment, jealousy and envy, pomp and Ahaṅkāra, turn life as far as we can into a sacred one, and reach the goal.
If we want to make the birds on a tree fly away, what way do we take? Only when we go under the tree and clap our hands do all the birds on the tree fly away. In just the same way, when the birds called lust, anger, delusion, greed, pride and envy settle on the tree called our life and keep soiling this life in many ways, if we stand under this tree and make the sound “Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Govinda”, all these birds called bad qualities fly away; it brings about a sacred heart, and shining as an ideal divine … for the path of life, it shows us our way. So, establishing fellowships of God from today, and gathering in one place in the evening though we toil and labour all day at our work, you will restore once again, through remembering the Name, “Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Govinda, Nārāyaṇa”, our ancient tradition and the sacred culture of Bhārata.
