Passage 5

In plain words

Without punishment there is no protection. Because there is no such punishment these days, the students' education goes to waste. But the punishment too must be in measure. Only then does it become discipline. ‘I am the guru, after all’: that is no reason for punishment to be too harsh.

If teachers keep these things in mind, our students of the Bhārata to come will be of use not only to our own country but to other countries as well. Above all, the children must be told about the culture of Bhārata. Many ṛṣis, rulers and faithful wives made sacrifices and upheld our culture of Bhārata. That is why, even in today's conditions, it is still possible to live with integrity. Above all, children must be taught moral, dharmic and spiritual matters. Along with these, we must foster an equal regard and respect for all religions. What all religions teach is one and the same Satya. All religions teach one Dharma, one goal. So Bal Vikas children must not hold hostile feelings towards any religion.

First, we must teach the children the sayings in the holy books, the Rāmāyaṇa, the Bhārata, the Koran, the Bible and the rest, which teach moral precepts, moral paths and sacred duties. And we too must have good conduct. We must not teach them and fail to practise it ourselves. However much we teach here, if the atmosphere at home is not right, all our teaching goes to waste. So we must meet the children's parents as well and teach them well what kind of training they should give the children at home. In fact, it is through their parents that children are spoiled to some extent. Children are ruined by too much pampering; we must keep our love in check for them. We must not give them more money than they need. If children are to grow up exemplary, the parents on one side and the teachers on the other are responsible.

The whole future of Bhārata rests on the Bal Vikas children. Today's Bal Vikas students are tomorrow's students of our College. This is primary education. This is the foundation. Their future rests on it. If there is carelessness here, the whole building falls. This is the foundation of the building of their life. So you must be good. You must look on the service you do as service to the nation, service to society, service to God and service to the world. Every form of service is held within this place of the teacher. The teacher's is a very great place. The gift of education is the greatest of all gifts. You are the sculptors who shape the nation; on you rests the responsibility of shaping the stones that are the students. If you take a little trouble, you will have served the nation itself. We must achieve this aim of ours by serving selflessly. I hope that you will look on them as your own children and shape them well. If you tell Me whatever problems, questions or doubts you have, I will give you the answers to them. So, hoping that you will not waste time but will carry out your responsibility well, and will pass these things on to all the other teachers too and give them the advice, encouragement and enthusiasm they need, and blessing you, I bring My talk to a close.
