Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

These are the five elements, the five life-breaths. If a man loses any one of these five life-breaths, he cannot be whole.

Mere acquaintance with books and the ability to give the meanings of words is not education

So the student must enter the path of Satya, practise Dharma, live a life of Śānti, shine in the principle of Prema, and come to his end on the path of Ahiṃsā. This is man's goal. This is the fulfilment of humanness. This is the merit a man must earn. Only when we have studied such learning can we call ourselves educated. Mere acquaintance with books, the ability to give the meanings of words, can never be education. Only when we open the door of the heart can we recognise the excellence of education. Only when we open the door of the heart do we understand the divinity within it. Without understanding this divinity it is not possible to seek the path of Satya in daily life. That is why man is always falling into unrest. For man, fallen into unrest, toiling without rest, ever anxious, with endless desires and griefs he does not understand, grasping after a form he can never reach, these lights of learning are lamps that show him a good direction. We must try to tend these lamps in the right way.

In the culture of Bhārata women have a special place

Today is the anniversary of the organisation Messengers of Sathya Sai. This anniversary is a meeting of former girl students. Today a situation has arisen in which girl students must conduct themselves with the greatest care. The Bhagavad Gītā says that women, who hold a sacred place in the culture of Bhārata, have seven kinds of power. Women endowed with such power must use their power with the greatest care. Before English education came, the women of Bhārata dedicated their time to ways of nourishing a sacred culture. Today, because of the showy life that came with the spread of English education, they try to live their lives with meaningless behaviour. It is women who, from those days until now, have upheld the special meaning of holy days and festivals through worship in the home, the cleanliness of the house, and fitting skill in food and in daily ways!
