In plain words
He doubted, "Is there no Bhakti in me, or is there no power in Rāma?" He thought it over well. "Is Lakṣmaṇa a lesser man, is Bharata a lesser man, is Hanumān a lesser man? All of them worship Rāma. Is it because there is no divinity in Him? These are worldly thoughts," he thought, and then he began:
Would a monkey cross the ocean, Rāma, would a lady bind You to a mortar, would Lakṣmī Devī love You, would Lakṣmaṇa worship You, would Bharata of subtle mind gaze and gaze at You and bow? Ah, how great is Bhakti for Rāma!
O Rāma! Your power is very great. Otherwise, is Lakṣmī an ordinary woman? Why would she worship You, why would she never leave Your feet? Hanumān, supremely calm, virtuous and strong, absorbed in Your service: is it because there is no power in You? Is there no inner meaning in Lakṣmaṇa of subtle mind serving You always? Lakṣmaṇa had a most subtle mind. Rāma did not hand him a sword and say, "Cut off Śūrpaṇakhā's nose and ears." Rāma looked up and counted four fingers. That meant śruti. The four Vedas are called śruti. Śruti means hearing. So its meaning was "cut off the ears". Lakṣmaṇa understood this with so subtle a mind. Rāma looked up again. To look up meant the nose. Lakṣmaṇa grasped it and cut off the nose too. One who can recognise the meaning from a gesture and not from words has a subtle mind. It is not from foolishness that all these called You God. All of these were learned, powerful and wise. Without knowing the nature of the wise, people say, "All who go to Sai Bābā are fools."
