Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Without devotion to God there is no morality or honesty. The path of morality, the path of Dharma and the spiritual path are man's chief life-breath. It is because this spiritual life is lost that morality is rooted out. When morality and the spiritual are rooted out, Satya becomes cheap. Today we read only the cheap books found in the bazaar. But we do not read the Rāmāyaṇa or the Bhārata or the Bhāgavatam, an Upaniṣad, the Bible or the Qur'ān, which teach morality and honesty. We do not read the books of great souls at all. What is the reason? Life has become dry; the reason? He has become artificial and is not a man with a heart. What is done today comes tomorrow in the form of a result. We must recognise the truth that only when this result is right will my future go well.

The past and the future are both in the present

All of you know the root cause of unrest in the world today. I too keep telling it in many ways. Those who are old: "In my past I lived happily, at ease, and enjoyed many comforts. In this present I suffer many sorrows, fears and anxieties," they say, and waste their time always thinking of the past. The young worry about the future. "After I pass this, after I get this job, after I go abroad, after I marry, I shall be like this and like that": so they build castles in the air. The old brooding on the past and the young on the future, between them both forget the present. That is how so many troubles begin. We must recognise well that our past and our future are both in the present. Present is not ordinary present, this is omnipresent. We must keep this as our aim.
