In plain words
Embodiments of Prema!
Today we have gained boundless scientific knowledge. But it shows only an outward civilisation. What we need today, though, is the ripening of the heart. That gives the Sarasvatī within. It gives the student not only the power of intellect but breadth of heart. When we bring in not merely what belongs to the physical but also the principle of the Ātma, which belongs to the inner life, education reaches its fullness. By that, the way opens to nourish discipline as well. Learning without discipline can never be learning. Education is what shapes a man into one full of compassion. The educated must not turn into people who are merely selfish and narrow. Education means the sacred virtue of character that springs from the heart.
Fear, Bhakti and faith
To shape the student into a whole made of these three, fear, Bhakti and faith, is social education. That same takes shape as national education. Fear does not mean bringing out the weaknesses in man. Fear of sin: the student must keep far away from sinful qualities such as hurting others, reviling them and doing them violence. Then Bhakti means Bhakti for God and Bhakti for the country. The country does not mean the soil. The country is the gathering of the people. One must honour the people, win their respect, and live a life that is an example. "Jananī janmabhūmiś ca." The country that gave us birth is the true Mother Goddess. Only when Bhakti for the country grows strong can one be called a true son of the motherland.
