Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

It is only because people today have lost faith in their motherland and in God that humanness has been hidden. So merely teaching physical science must not be the aim of education. True education helps the progress of the world. Education must be such that it develops, along with knowledge, breadth, sacred feeling and virtue of character.

Man today is establishing many theories. He is learning a great many physical things. But how far is he able to nourish humanness? Only when this is recognised does education have value. Otherwise education has no value at all. A man may become a philosopher. But he cannot cross over by philosophy alone. He must blend humanness into it too. Humanness alone gives true value. What is the form of humanness? One must live with thoughts, words and deeds made one. When one acts otherwise, it cannot be called education.

Education or agitation?

Problems that would plunge any thinking man into confusion are seen far and wide in education today. Education has value only when it shapes every field of daily life so that it is strong and useful. The human qualities, Satya, Prema, forbearance, sympathy and the like, are not to be seen at all in education. Education today has become merely mechanical. Neither life nor skill is seen in education. Education has become merely artificial. Humility must, as a rule, be part of education. Character and purity must have a special place. The educated of today are in a state where they do not understand what purity or character means. Saying "education", which is vidyā, they stir up agitation, unrest. Teachers must show not agitation, that is, unrest, but elevation, unfolding. Only one who has entered on the sacred path can be called educated. Acquaintance with many books can never be education.
