Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If students enter politics, on this side they cannot pursue their studies. On that side they cannot achieve anything in politics either. It becomes ‘fallen from both, and renunciation on top’. He ends up unable to reach either of the two. There must be no opening whatever for teachers to enter politics. Their responsibility is simply to shape the children. It is only for selfishness and their own advantage that they are entering politics. They must recognise the children's feelings and teach them the way to conduct themselves well.

Students are now getting ready for elections as well. Elections to a students' union are turning out more dreadful than an Assembly election. What has a student who stays two or three years in college to do with these elections? Thousands of rupees are spent, people meet with accidents, and studies are ruined. Leadership among students is certainly needed! We must choose by selection the student who is best in everything, in discipline, conduct, habits and marks; there should be no election. What are elections for? They start unions for the sake of unity. A union means everyone staying together. But in the name of the union they fall to contesting and are torn to pieces. Students who ought to achieve co-operation are performing operations! What is said is union; what is done is different from it! This can never be a union. Teachers too are losing the standing of authority from which to teach the students. What is the reason? Teachers too have their unions! When they do that very thing themselves, where is their authority to tell the students not to? When we do not ourselves commit what we consider to be a wrong, we have the authority to tell it to others. Principals and Vice-Chancellors must think about this matter carefully.

Not allergy: energy is what is needed

There is another matter too that we must consider. Students should pursue education for the sake of nurturing good qualities. Today, the more education grows, the more good qualities dwindle.
