Passage 9

In plain words

By the mind the world comes into being; by the mind the world vanishes; by the mind Dharma, artha, kāma and Mokṣa spring up; by the mind success in yoga is won.

For these paths of yoga, for the world's power, for the creation of the world and for its destruction, for all of it the mind alone is the cause. Describing the power of the mind in this way, Tulasīdās said that man's life is the very form of the mind. The mind, he said, is the power of words. Words are thoughts in visible form. Seen this way, the mind alone is the basis of our words. A small example.

When someone comes and abuses you in many ways, “You mad woman, you utter fool, you ugly creature,” how angry you become! Words alone are the cause of this anger. Thoughts alone are the cause of the words. If someone else comes and praises you in many ways, describing you as, “Amma, you are Dharma embodied, you are Prema embodied, you are sacrifice itself,” you swell with great joy. Words alone are the cause of this. Good thoughts and bad thoughts alone are the cause of plunging a person into joy or into sorrow. So our life is made of thoughts. Only when we keep these thoughts in the right way can we enjoy a life of Śānti, an ideal life.

At this age many wrong thoughts may come. Those thoughts may come from food and habits. You must try to check them by your own effort. When there is a bad smell in the house, what do we do? We bring in fragrance. We burn sāmbrāṇi. Or we light incense sticks. We make it smell sweet. In the same way, if bad thoughts of some kind come into your heart, you must at once pay them no heed at all and try to develop a good thought. We must not put an evil thought that has come into action. That is a great mistake. By putting it into action a man becomes very excited and turns into a madman. In a fit of excitement all the blood boils. Some Blood cells puncture.
