Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

"The man without morality is worse than a monkey." The reason is that the monkey keeps showing an ideal in many ways. At one time Darwin spoke: "Without me, you are not," he said. But whether this is true or Asatya is impossible to tell. But what the monkey says: this is the supreme truth. "O man, without me you are not," the monkey challenged. "I myself have taken the form of your mind," it said. I am the one who makes you eat and the one who makes you walk. I am the one who beguiles you in the world. I am the one who makes you forget God. That is why they have given man's mind my name, calling it the monkey. "I am better than you," it said. I did service to Rāma. You are doing service to Kāma. Because I became the servant of Rāma, Kāma became my servant. Kāma is a demon. Rāma is God. In the world the tree, the little bird, the boat, the bird, the squirrel: all of us took part in the service of Rāma. We served Rāma. What did man do? Man put Mother Sītā through certain hardships. Through that he brought Rāma into distress. Will man, who gives pain to God Himself, not hurt men? How can such a man, a servant of Kāma, be greater than the monkey, a servant of Rāma? O man, I at least have steadiness at some time. You men have not a moment's steadiness. That is why they said, "monkey is better than man". It went on showing clearly the truth that the one without such humanness is lower than a monkey. The day we develop moral values, hold up humanness and manifest divinity, only on that day do we become those who have expressed true humanness.

In Sanskrit, vyakti has the name pauruṣa. We think of pauruṣa, of vyakti, as an ordinary word. No. No. Only for a man of pauruṣa is "vyakti" a name true to its meaning. Only for a humanness that has lived with morality and integrity, joined with good conduct, is "vyaktitva" a name true to its meaning. In English this very thing they have called "Person". This word "Person" came from the word "Persona" in the Roman language. Persona means a portion of the divine. Whoever makes manifest the divinity that dwells in man, hidden and unmanifest, only to him does "vyakti" belong as a name true to its meaning. In each and every human being there is a portion of the divine. But not all are making it manifest. Not all are understanding it. To give the name "vyakti" to a man who does not understand it and cannot make it manifest is meaningless. So with every human being too: whoever brings out the divinity that dwells within him, secret and hidden, he alone is the true vyakti.
