Passage 13

In plain words

Manasyekaṃ vacasyekaṃ karmaṇyekaṃ mahātmanāṃ

We start business resting on our book knowledge. With bookish knowledge alone one cannot reach the highest state. We must achieve this through experience. This is the book, the pustaka. This is the head, the mastaka. It is not enough merely to put this pustaka into the mastaka. We must see that we do not come out zero in practical. What is in the book must come into the head. We must bring it down into practical. The result that comes in this practical is the true result. Today nobody gets the right result in practical. We may read books, earn an MBA degree and write it beside our name, but we must earn the value that befits it. We must recognise this truth in Manas, in Buddhi, and in the way of practice. Today the dealings of companies are outside morality. Things may go on like this for some time. But at some point or other they get caught. What is the reason? They do not behave in keeping with the learning they have studied. That is what I said earlier. ‘Manasyekaṃ vacasyekaṃ karmaṇyekaṃ mahātmanāṃ.’ There must be oneness of these three. First of all we must foster our values. We must take good note of our conduct. Only when we behave in this way is our intelligence put to good use. In this world, in every branch of learning, balance is very important. Without this balance we cannot do even the smallest work. The whole of life rests on balance alone. We must go on guarding this balance properly. How can we guard it? We have a great deal of intelligence. But what are we doing with this intelligence? We are misusing it. We are putting it on the wrong path. That is, what is the inner meaning of this? We are killing knowledge. It is through killing it that the balance is lost. When we skill our knowledge, then the balance is steady. When the balance is steady, then it turns into insight (inner vision). We must always foster such intelligence.
