Passage 8

In plain words

This land of Kerala is a land bound up with God alone.

But in so holy a land some conditions went on changing with the times. Under the influence of place, time and circumstance, men's minds too went on changing. Between man and man hatreds went on growing. Between mind and mind thick clouds of Ajñāna went on spreading. With such a change of atmosphere, man's nature too went on changing. However much it changed, Bhakti and prapatti have not been able to change at all. When we look at Kerala by its form of government, we think it is a communist place, a communist state. No. No. Hearts are steeped to this day in holy devotion to God. On this Onam day there is no one at all in Kerala who does not enter into this festival full of Prema. Everyone bathes, puts on sandal paste and takes part in whatever programmes he is to take part in at this festival. When you look in the temples, the people are packed close. Through political tactics differences appear on the surface, but no differences at all are seen within. These have to do only with selfishness and self-interest. Bhakti and prapatti stay fast in the heart. Who is the jīva? Who is God? When this question came up, they said, "What moves is the jīva; what does not move is God." The principle of the jīva is that which changes all the time and is full of restlessness. To change is the mark of the jīva. The principle of God is what does not change. So though some thousands of years have passed, this feeling for God in Kerala is a divinity that remains an unchanging oneness.

No one can say that the glory of this Onam is this or that. Between the two stories, that of the great devotee Prahlāda, the grandfather, and that of Bali Cakravarti, the grandson, here, between grandfather and grandson, stood the father: he was Virocana, he was the rationalist. This atheism came from there. That is why: The pleasure is an interval between two pains. Between two goods a bad has come in. Prahlāda was a great devotee. Bali was a great devotee. In between, the one somewhat lacking in Bhakti was this Virocana. In the world the line of Prahlāda keeps growing. Here and there the line of Virocana keeps growing. Without this change this world itself would not be.
