In plain words
Once, when he went to America, there was a man named Caturveda Śāstri. Caturvedaśāstri means one who has recognised all four Vedas: that was its meaning. Those foreigners thought that one who had recognised the four Vedas was a great hero. Once, while he was translating the Veda of Bhārata in part, the proper meaning of some ślokas was not known. This Max Muller kept enquiring in many ways for meanings of this kind. Every person who went abroad would first of all go and see Max Muller. This man too, Caturvedaśāstri, having finished his own work and meaning to go back to India, gave a visiting card and sent it in. Max Muller swelled up with a joy he could not contain. ‘A Caturvedaśāstri! Just when I am trying to make out some meaning of the Veda, a Caturvedaśāstri has come from Bhārata. This is God's grace itself,’ he thought. At once this Max Muller went himself and brought that Caturvedaśāstri inside, with honour. The moment he entered, Max Muller felt as though the very form of God had come before him. He gave him full satisfaction with Tea biscuits. When he asked, ‘Where have you come from?’, he said, ‘I have come from Bhārata.’ When asked ‘What is your name?’, he said, ‘My name is Caturvedaśāstri.’ ‘Aha! How fortunate you are! You came forth, you were born, in the great land of Bhārata. Your birth has found its fulfilment,’ said Max Muller. At once he brought a book and asked, ‘What is the meaning of this word?’ ‘Where is this word?’ asked this Caturvedaśāstri. ‘Here, it is in such-and-such a commentary of Śaṅkara,’ he said. This man did not know the meaning. He did not know even one Veda. Then he was astonished. ‘What, sir! You have taken the name Caturvedaśāstri, and you do not know a word of even one Veda?’ he said. ‘Well then, do you know anything about Śaṅkarācārya?’ he asked. … That Śaṅkarācārya is some pedantic brahmin. Then Max Muller thought. All along before this, he had set his faith on spending the whole of his last years in the great land of Bhārata and on bringing to its end, at his last hour, this body, in the great land of Bhārata itself. The moment he heard the words of this Caturvedaśāstri: ‘Chī, chī! Not all who are in Bhārata are great paṇḍits. Wherever one may be, it is the level of the heart that matters,’ and remembering God right there, he decided that he would go to Bhārata no more.
