Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Culture itself arose from that Sanskrit; and though encouragement and enthusiasm of this kind are growing abundantly abroad, it is a very sad thing to have to say that for it only discouragement and despair are growing. From ancient times Bhārata has adorned the teacher's seat for all lands. Foreigners too are trying, with great śraddhā and Bhakti, to experience the principle of the culture that is in this Sanskrit. We try to follow only the life of foreigners, but we do not agree at all to put into practice this culture of our own land, which is pure, stainless and selfless. Enna bhārate tanna bhārata. What is not in the land of Bharata is not to be seen at all in any other land. Everyone has kept recognising, too, that the forms, the names or any of the things in Bhārata are very sacred.

As a king of Greece was travelling to Bhārata, the religious teacher of that Greek laid one charge on this king. ‘O King! You are setting foot in the sacred land of Bhārata. So I trust that you can fulfil my long-cherished wish,’ he said. He told him to bring the holy water of the Gaṅgā in a vessel. He told him to bring a copy of the divine Bhagavad Gītā. He told him to bring some of the holy dust of Bhārata. He told him to buy and bring as well a copy of the history of the Mahābhārata, which recognised superhuman powers and lived a superhuman life. He taught that in the Mahābhārata every principle of the moral, physical, worldly, spiritual and scientific kind is contained. When foreigners recognise the secret of the Bhārata in this way, the people of Bhārata, if you ask what the Bhārata is, compare it with gārelu, saying, ‘If you listen, listen to the Bhārata; if you eat, eat gārelu.’ In Bhārata, the one who is the great rich man, the wealthy one, is Kubera. In Indonesia they have even named a bank Kuberā. They have named the airline Garuḍa. That is to say, how sacred Garuḍa is! They recognised that he is Viṣṇu's vehicle. Viṣṇu means the One who is all-pervading and all-knowing. They understood the truth that, with this Garuḍa as His vehicle, He pervades everywhere. But today we take Garuḍa for a bird. Truly, even to call ourselves people of Bhārata is a great shame.
