॥॥ ॥॥ ॥॥ ॥॥

In plain words

You must recognise the inner meaning of our founding one more university when there are so many universities in the world. It is not merely to study learning alone. Our intention is to make them heroes worthy of the country, fostering along with learning humility and obedience, Viveka and Vijñāna. From those days till today I have been waiting for such students to come forth.

I am searching, I am still searching, I have been searching, then and today, for a true human student. (I am searching …) There is no lack of men: there are four hundred crores of them; I saw only human shapes; I could not see the true form. (I am searching …) As one takes the pods of the silk-cotton tree for mangoes, as one sees a wild cane and, taking it for sugarcane, chews it, (I am searching …) as one sees the shape of glittering stones and takes them for sugar-candy, do not be deceived by shape: virtue itself is this, the form of man. (I am searching …)

What we need is not a man merely in shape. A man of virtue is what we need. So, hoping that you will become students who develop virtue, and blessing you, I bring My talk to a close.

Students! We must understand, ever so deeply, the principle of the student. This, which we have understood, we must put into practice. What we have put into practice we must experience so that it touches the heart. The very Ānanda we have experienced we must give to others. So we must not try to ruin our minds with excessive desires. So keeping our desires under control, fostering only what is needed and casting off bad qualities, you must first of all set your own home right with good qualities. Keep your parents pleased. If you give your parents sorrow, your life will sink wholly in sorrow. As much Ānanda as you give your parents today, so much will your children make you happy tomorrow. But today's students, out of the Ahaṅkāra that says ‘We are students’, pay no heed to their parents. So I hope that you will earnestly practise just these four, mātṛdevo bhava, pitṛdevo bhava, ācāryadevo bhava, rejoice in them, and give this ideal to the country.
