In plain words

On that pillar they have put up somewhat brighter bulbs. In the middle they have put up still brighter bulbs. In front of us they have put up very bright bulbs. But the current in all of them is one and the same! The voltage may look different. What is present in all, in all beings, everywhere, is this consciousness. It depends on the persons who recognise it. But there is a reason why this light is hidden to some extent. There are six kinds of obstacles that keep this light from coming out. The Veda went on speaking of these as the six thieves. Kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, mātsarya. Not only these six inner enemies, but the eight kinds of pride too hold it back. Pride of caste, pride of strength, pride of youth, pride of beauty, pride of learning, pride of wealth, pride of rule, pride of tapas. Because these prides cover the inner consciousness, we cannot rightly experience its light; we cannot reach it. Believing in the principle of the Ātma that we must experience this consciousness everywhere as one, we must make a fitting effort to hold back these qualities, whose nature turns outward. But these have arisen only from our own delusions. Born of us alone, growing through us alone, developing through us alone, they torment us ourselves.

The six inner enemies and the eight prides, born and grown in man, torment man himself

As you know, in today's technology many scientists, by their skill of intellect, their cleverness and their wealth of learning, have gone on creating many kinds of powerful weapons, missiles and certain machines. A small example. There is the atom bomb. There is the hydrogen bomb; who created these? These were created only by the wealth of man's power of intellect. Who gave form to this? Man himself! The very man who gave it form, gave it power and set it in its place: that man these bombs threaten and terrify.
