In plain words
Modern scientists have learnt to make them and to develop them, but they have not learnt to keep them under control. In the same way, these six inner enemies and these eight prides that have covered us today grow through us alone, develop through us alone, and try to torment us ourselves. We must try to recognise this truth through enquiry. Pride of caste. What is pride of caste? The divinity that is in every man is the very divinity that is in me. All men are equal. There is no room at all for differences of caste and religion. We are all children of the one Lord. Whatever caste I think I belong to, you too belong to that caste. If we recognise this meaning, there is no room at all for Ahaṅkāra. Then, if we look at the strength of wealth: all are things that pass away. It comes, it goes. Man does need money. But only up to a point, and only that much. We must keep it within limits. Every man's life is within a limit. Only when there is a temperature of 98.4 degrees in our body is it perfect normal. If it goes to 99°, it is illness! In our body a blood pressure of 120-80 is perfect normal. If it is 90, that means illness has begun. Our eyes can see only a little light; they cannot see light beyond the limit. If we look at light beyond the limit, the retina in the eye burns. In the same way, if we enquire well into the strength and capacity of every limb in the human body, it becomes clear that our whole life is a limited company. In a life with such limits, what reason is there to be proud? There is no room at all. When, in which minute, what will happen? It is a leather bag with nine holes, not a diamond pot full of light; moment by moment foul things ooze from it, no civet or musk is ever born of it; inside the belly is filth, all the rest is bones; look closely, and outside is dirty skin. No one knows when or how this body will die.
Beauty, youth, the strength of the senses: do not strut because you have them, brother! There lies ahead, and soon, the crocodiles' feast called old age. Taitai taitai tai, O puppet! See the fun of it, the leather puppet!
