Passage 2

In plain words

Sacred feelings and useful thoughts do not enter this student's heart at all.

The root cause of this is that we are failing to find the right way in the matter of teaching. Today the system of education has neither life nor skill, and teaching goes on merely mechanically. Neither the teacher nor the students can recognise the special greatness of education. The feeling that education is merely for a job envelops their minds, leads them off into wrong ways of many kinds, and is rooting out humanness itself. The system of education is the guide to human progress; today the very effort they duly make to use it merely to keep a life going, for selfish ends, for their own advantage, is how they are falling into such unrest. So what we need today is excellent teachers. Only when excellent teachers foster it can the future of the country and of the students reach any state, however high.

The whole world rests on the good fortune of the students. The students are the wealth and riches of today's nation. Of all the fields, the field of education is very important. In the moral, the physical, the religious, the spiritual, the worldly and the scientific paths alike, teachers fit to lead the nature of these students along the right way are urgently needed today. Aparigraha, brahmacarya, spirituality, Ahiṃsā, Satya: we must develop these five qualities abundantly in the students. In man these very five keep nourishing them, like the five prāṇas. Students and teachers alike must follow first of all what is called aparigraha.

What we must give to one another and take from one another is the very principle of Prema. Only when unbroken Prema and the zeal for service grow abundantly in students and in teachers will the country attain plenty of every kind. Teachers must recognise the truth that teaching is not for getting on in life but for recognising the sacredness of life. But today's teachers and students forget the feeling that it is for the supreme goal of life; because they keep a livelihood as their aim, students and teachers alike cannot follow the proper way.
