Passage 15

In plain words

A close bond must be made between the professors who come from outside and our own professors. When the professors who come simply finish their own work and go, we must understand the difference between them and these professors here. Each one of us must meet these professors and form a committee with them: what are their problems? How do they stand with the students? This we must find out. What is more, now and then, without a word beforehand, they must go into each class and see how the lessons are being taught. What is lacking in this Institute? Though it is only four years since it began, what fine buildings we have had built! In every matter we have given many facilities. We pay salaries on the government scale, and we give due increments. In what have we stinted the teachers? Why should they not act in keeping with that? They do not. The deeds that would match it are not being done. That is why, whenever I am to go into a class or come anywhere, I do not find enough zeal and joy. Of course I am ever Ānanda itself! But joy does not come to me from you. Once an institution is founded, it is my responsibility to watch how it stands and how it fares. That is why I have had to take on certain responsibilities for it too. The students do not have enough zeal. I call them alone and ask them. They may be afraid when they see the professors and the officers, but with Swami they speak openly, the poor things! They have no fear or hesitation at all in telling Swami. So they tell Swami their troubles and losses. Complaints of this kind should not come from our students. We take not a single naya paisa from them as fees. There is no medical fee, no games fee, no library fee, no laboratory fee, no exam fee. In such circumstances it is not right that they should lose heart like this.
