In plain words
A small example. Those who are there may say: “Oh! They are very silent,” they may say. This is merely a kind of deafness. If we go into the market, we cannot hear anything people say to one another. It is all confusion. But if you go some distance from the market and look, then you know what it is like there. In this room and that room they seem to be fine, talking softly. But come outside, and all these merge into one. Then you know: like a loudspeaker. So there must be someone to look after these three, Health, food, silence. There are some even now; poor things, what use is it? “My son is in the army, Amma,” he said, it seems. That is, in the military. What was he doing? Dragging the dead away and throwing them out, it seems. If he is in the war he must fight; he is a hero. But there are some sepoys. Dragging off the dead, burying them, shaving heads: they do all these. Is all this the work one does by being in the army? Poor things, some do not know about medical matters. When they do not know which medicine to give for which illness, they must take them to the hospital and show them to the doctor. In this matter of health we must be very careful. We must keep watch from time to time. If there is a little delay, some other danger may happen. So in this Hostel there must be some five or six as a committee to look after the children according to the children's behaviour, the children's silence, the children's health.
The Department committee must hold its meeting every month on the 1st sunday. This Faculty committee must hold its meeting every 2 months on the second sunday. This Academic committee must meet once in three months. They may hold that too on a sunday. Next, as for Games, Hostel, Library, they must look into things once every fifteen days. Because some subjects keep changing. We must give the new children what they need, well. Then, are the children studying well? Which books are they reading? Are they reading Novels or reading subjects? There are some children. They take a big subject book, put a Novel in the middle of it and go on reading. We must not let our children get into such reading. The officers who look after the library too must watch what these children are reading. This is a very big task, but not for one person. Whether Professors or Lecturers or Readers, for anyone this is a very big task. But you must do it regarding it as a service. You must believe this to be a great sādhana. Truly, to set so many children right: how great a fruit that is! What great grace you will have gained! Our students must become ideal students.
Students! In your rooms you have your monitors as well.
