Passage 16

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

They are children too. They are like children falling in with children. But try, without anyone telling you, to bring about a change by your own strength, the strength to conduct yourselves on your own. There is no use regretting it afterwards. Do not think even in a dream that you will get such a chance again. Make good use of this fine chance that has come your way. In the Hostel, in the Institute, in Prasanthi Nilayam, you must make your discipline one with sitting well and steadily. During these bhajans, or discourses of any other kind, you must not stir up these disturbances at all. This began six months ago. We must regard this as a chief stage of life. In these rooms you must not, towards one another, fight in any way, or use words of certain kinds out of some kind of hatred. Ten days ago it happened like that in one room. One boy struck another boy. May such things happen in our Hostel? When such things happened, why did no one take action on it? Precisely because we delay in this way, they keep growing still more. Only while iron is red-hot does it stretch as far as you like when you strike it with the hammer. After it has cooled, whoever strikes it, it will not stretch. Only when we give one boy a fitting punishment at that time will another boy keep from doing that wrong. This is not kindness. It is the mark of laziness. This is not developing a good habit. It is developing a bad habit. Have I not more kindness than you? I have all the kindness one could want. Not so. Not so. When kindness arises in me, I give my life. But if there is wrongdoing, I will take even a life. Because one must not do wrong. We must shape ourselves into a life without wrong. If one does it once, forgiveness. If one does it all the time, ten more, seeing that one, turn out the same way. That is just how they have grown now. From now on, at any time, in bhajan, in prayer, in discourses, wandering about outside here and there, treating it carelessly, coughing, sneezing: this is not right. This is a fine chance to control yourselves a little. When there is such a chance, your behaving carelessly like monkeys: if it goes on like this from now on, we will not keep you even a moment, in the Hostel or in the Institute. Then in life there will be no seeing this again. So conduct yourselves with care. Silence is God. The true God is in this very silence. Even within the sound outside there is silence. The sound within silence is itself Brahman, they said. In this silence we can develop the sacred divinity. What this silence does is help others too. If you go against it, you will be people who have done harm to others too.

So from now on we must develop silence a great deal. We must grow in the mind a kind of one-pointedness. We must try to remove our mala, vikṣepa and āvaraṇa little by little.
