In plain words

Even then you must think everything over carefully. Here is a teacher. Or here is a bank manager. They must think it over: are we doing work enough for the salaries we get, or not? They must give the answer to themselves. You must do work equal to your pay. If you work till your muscles melt, you may eat till your teeth wear down. But that is not how it is now. The ironed clothes one wears must not get crumpled. One must sit under the fan. Everything must come to the table; one must not step over the threshold. Not a penny must be spent. And Kaivalya must come brimming over! In this modern age all kinds of comforts have increased. In ancient times there were no comforts. The people of those days lived long and enjoyed life to the full. Now a five-year-old child wears glasses! In earlier times there was no one who grieved for want of sons. In the Dvāpara Yuga people had to grieve over sons. That was the sign that the Kali Yuga was coming. Today there is no natural environment at all. There is no pure air. There is no pure water. Everything is pollution! Sixty students in a hundred are damaged in mind. A young man came from America. He must be about eighteen. I knew all about him. Still I asked. When I asked where he had come from, he said, 'From America.' When I asked what he was studying, he said he was not a student. When I asked why he was sitting there so sad, he wept, saying he was in great pain. Why the pain? His second wife had divorced him, it seems! The son was with his mother, it seems! He loved the boy very much, it seems. He could not bear to be apart from him, it seems. That is how things are with young men today! Young men must free themselves from attachment to sense objects of this kind!
