In plain words
We must pray: ‘Have only holy and meaningful deeds that do good to others done through me.’ The fruit of our actions is the very root cause of birth.
Karma, janma, dharma and marma are joined with Brahman. Brahman is like a house of these four walls. Brahma dwells within these very four walls. So we must not do whatever the mind likes. We must enquire well whether a thing is fit to be done or not, and only then enter into the action. Haste is not right. Hurry turns into poison. If we perform our actions properly, there will be no room for rajas and tamas to enter. If sāttvic feelings alone are to enter, the heart must be pure. God does not dwell in a heart that is not pure.
No wrath, no favour
Some people keep asking, ‘Why does God keep tormenting me like this?’ For God there is neither getting angry nor bestowing favour: neither exists. God has no wish either to punish one person or to protect another. The right to action alone belongs to the devotees. The right to the fruit of action is God's. The actions are yours to do. The giver of the fruit is God. If the actions are right, God grants nothing but the fitting fruit. But without enquiring into the nature of the actions they do, people keep their eyes only on the fruit God has given. That is the great mistake.
‘O God! Among so many crores of people, where am I in Your sight? Where will You ever see me? Will You not look at me any more?’ So a devotee was lamenting, the story goes! A voice came to the devotee: ‘O devotee! You have set your sight on so many tasks. But on Me you have not set it at all! You have not so much as thought of Me! Is it you who forgot? Or I?’ Devoted to worldly occupations and work, people think about everything. But God they do not think of. Relatives and friends who live somewhere, in some country, in whatever region, they remember without forgetting. But God, who is close by, they do not remember.
