Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Only when troubles come: ‘O God! Have You forgotten me?’ they say. Is God the one who forgot? It is they themselves, surely!

Postman duty

If we first recognise our own faults, God's holy heart becomes clear to us. But today what goes on is this: people hide their own faults, and broadcast only the punishment God has given. Even in the smallest matter, there is no effect without a cause. If there is no fault, there is no occasion at all for punishment to fall. For every action there is a reaction. For every sound there is an echo. For every form there is a reflection. God waits ready to give a return for everything. If we do a good deed, a good fruit; if we do a bad deed, a bad fruit: He is ready to give it at once. Karma is like an envelope that comes by post. The one who delivers it is God. What was written gets its answer. God delivers it. That is all! That is why He has the name ‘Karmaphalapradātā’.

When Duryodhana set out to humiliate Draupadī, she prayed to Kṛṣṇa in many ways. Kṛṣṇa heard her plea, and still could do nothing! The reason: the law of nature. At that moment Kṛṣṇa was thinking about the law of nature itself. There is no going against it. A small example. If your foot slips up high, you fall down. If you throw a ball up, it comes back down. What is the reason? The earth has that kind of power. Be it a man of crores or a man too poor for a meal, anyone whose foot slips must fall! Here there is no question of authority or the lack of it. If you ask the reason, it is the law of nature. No one can escape the law of nature.

Imperishable fruit for a small sacrifice

In keeping with the law of nature, Kṛṣṇa began to think over what Draupadī had done, and where. He considered whether Draupadī had ever done anything to earn protection in this assembly today.
