Passage 7

In plain words

Today, by overstepping your parents, you are upsetting their minds. Tell Me: if tomorrow your children do the same to you, how upset will your mind be? You must recognise that truth. Whatever pain I give my parents, that same pain will come to me. As the seed, so the plant. As the plant, so the fruit. Reaction, Resound, Reflection: there is no escaping this. So, if you want to do well in the future, you must respect them in the present. You must conduct yourself well in the present. We must develop the true knowledge that we must offer a divine, ideal life. This is true education.

You may learn some subjects or other. You may pass. You may specialise in them. But that is for earning a meal in the world. There must also be something for the uplift of life. A living is one thing. The supreme goal of life is another. Our life does not end with a living alone. There must also be the supreme goal of life. We waste our energy in so many ways. In truth the divine power in man is a power beyond all. We waste the energy of this power beyond all in these five: bad look, bad hearing, bad talk, bad thoughts, bad deeds. You may well think how much divine power is lost while we look with the eyes. One who has no eyes has a great deal of divine power. What is the reason? He has not wasted energy through the eyes. That is why intelligence is greater in them. One who has eyes walks at speed by day. By night he is thrown into confusion. But one who has no eyes walks the same by day and by night. That evenness is in him. The reason: he does not waste that energy. In those who are Dumb and deaf the energy is greater still. The more a man goes on reducing his senses, the greater his energy and intelligence become. What use is there in having intelligence? We must go on putting it to good use. The students of today, young men and young women, have all the intelligence they need. His Knowledge outgrows its bounds, and with Ahaṅkāra he spoils his knowledge. Having Knowledge is not enough. There must be balance in life. All of life rests on balance. When we turn Knowledge into skill, the balance is correct. But we kill our Knowledge with Ahaṅkāra, and the balance keeps slipping. When the balance slips, man behaves in a confused, disordered way. So why is there not concentration even for a single moment in humanity? Because Knowledge is not set on the right path but turned onto a crooked one. All this is artificial. There is no use in it.
