In plain words
He did not know it was Draupadī. "Grandsire, it is for that very thing that I am praying to you. It is for that I have come," she said. His mind was much troubled. What was the vow I made yesterday, and what is the promise I have given Draupadī today? The two seem to contradict each other. After some thought he called her near, "Child, come," and said, "Who told you this stratagem?" Meanwhile Kṛṣṇa came in with those sandals under His arm. "Kṛṣṇa, Līlās belong to You alone. The protection of devotees belongs to You alone. Your stratagems and devices belong to You alone. People of the world devise stratagems to hurt others. But You devise Your stratagems to protect the world. Kṛṣṇa, You alone are Your own equal." So he said. After giving this promise, Bhīṣma was very happy. Then hunger struck Bhīṣma. "Kṛṣṇa, You have brought something; give me a little," Bhīṣma asked. Then Kṛṣṇa set down the sandals He had wrapped in His upper cloth. "What is this, Swami! Where are these sandals from?" he asked. "Bhīṣma, you were pacing to and fro, deep in some thought; I saw it," He said. "The sandals women wear make some sound. Among them, the sandals worn by the Royal family make still more noise. The moment you heard that sound, you might take a look. So, that you should not hear that sound, I brought these under My arm," He said. Shedding streams of tears, Bhīṣma prayed, "For the protection of devotees does God carry even the sandals of devotees? O Kṛṣṇa, You alone are Your own equal." So there is nothing at all of which one can say that God may do this and may not do that. When He alone is everywhere one looks, what is there He may do, and what is there He may not? Whatever He does is not for His own sake. To show the human ideal, God displays many kinds of Līlās.
Once Kṛṣṇa was in conversation with the Pāṇḍavas. But Arjuna did not agree to some of the things said. When he did not agree, Kṛṣṇa acted as if He had grown a little angry. He left that assembly and went away. He went some distance. Meanwhile Bhīma, Dharmaja, Nakula and Sahadeva fell upon Arjuna. "Would you insult Kṛṣṇa, who is dear to us as our life! Would you dishonour Him in this assembly! Why did you disobey His command?" So they went on finding fault with him in many ways. Unable to bear these brothers' censure, he went on praying to Kṛṣṇa deep within. Kṛṣṇa, who had gone out so suddenly, turned and came back. Human nature is fickle. Pride is great. And those who have intelligence have pride beyond measure. These people with intelligence believe in nothing. Because you have too much intelligence, you blundered without thinking ahead or behind. From now on, please, do not use your intelligence. Bow to the command of God and conduct yourself by it. Then Arjuna said, 'Kariṣye vacanaṃ tava': "Kṛṣṇa, from now on I will bow to Your command," he said. Now you are My devotee.
