Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Foremost among the Pāṇḍavas; the one who faced many kinds of hardship, loss and sorrow and won the Gāṇḍīva: that is Arjuna. "You must be master of the senses, not a slave to the senses. Today you have become a slave to your mind. You have become a slave to your senses. No, no. The senses and the mind must serve you as your slaves. You are master of all these, so today give Me your word: 'Never in my life will I resolve on suicide,'" He said. "How so? Your life is My life. Eko vasi sarvabhūtāntarātma. It is I alone who am in all. Mamaivāṃśo jīvaloke jīvabhūta sanātanaḥ. From the beginning of time I have been in all beings as their life. So, Arjuna! To take your own life is to become the one who killed your beloved Kṛṣṇa," He said. "Alas, Swami! Unable to grasp all these inner meanings, I became a simpleton. Forgive this ignorant one. Never again in my life will I make such a resolve," he said. In this way, to protect the Pāṇḍavas every moment, He entered into many small tasks that ought not to be done.

One day a terrible battle was going on. That evening Bhīṣma took a vow. And that means it must be fulfilled. He made a promise that before sunset the next day he would kill all the Pāṇḍavas. The Pāṇḍavas knew that Bhīṣma's vow must be fulfilled. This news fell on Draupadī's ears: alas, what will become of me from tomorrow? There is only one way. And she: "Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa, friend in distress!" So she prayed. That very night Kṛṣṇa reached the place. She held Kṛṣṇa's feet and went on praying in many ways. The streams of her tears ran on like channels. Then Kṛṣṇa said, "Mother! Nothing at all can be done now against this. He is Bhīṣma. A supreme devotee. I must fulfil his word too. He is no ordinary man. He is the mighty son of Gaṅgā. I will only try to teach you a few stratagems," He said. Bhīṣma had made the vow, but his mind would not consent to slay the Pāṇḍavas, who are Dharma in person. So he drank no water at all. He took no food. Without sleeping he was pacing to and fro in his tent. Kṛṣṇa spoke to Draupadī. "Do as I tell you," He said. "You walk in front and I will come behind; I will come to Bhīṣma's tent. There, the tent is already in sight. Then, Draupadī, take off the sandals you have on your feet," He said. She bowed to Kṛṣṇa's command. He wrapped those sandals in His cloth. He put them under His arm. "Go at once and fall at Bhīṣma's feet," He said. Taking the moment when he was lost in some thought, Draupadī went and fell at Bhīṣma's feet. Bhīṣma, in his natural way, blessed her: "Dīrgha sumaṅgalī bhava."
