Passage 10

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

"Svāmī, is it true that you have given the king a long life? If the king alone lives long and the people who love the king have no long life, what use is such a king living on? So grant long life to my people too," she said. Only when the people are pure is the ruler too pure, and he must be long-lived. What use to the king is a long life that the people do not have? She asked him to bless both the people and the ruler to be long-lived. Then, for the tyāga she made, Brahmā blessed her: "May the ruler, the people and you be long-lived." The more tyāga we practise, the more our enjoyments keep increasing. What enjoyments? Divine enjoyments. That is our birth. "Listen, O sons of immortality!" We must become sons of immortality. We must not become sons of untruth. We must turn our heart into an ocean of milk. We must not turn it into an ocean of brine. We must make it grow into a large heart. We must not take in narrow feelings. Only then will Nārāyaṇa dwell in our heart. Him indeed they call the One who reclines on the ocean of milk. What does Kṣīrasāgara mean? He who lies reclining in your own sacred heart: He is Mahāviṣṇu.

How great an impurity it is to make this mind, the dwelling place of God, a dwelling for impure bad qualities! We must wipe away these wicked qualities, wicked feelings and wicked saṅkalpas and throw them out. We must take in sacred feelings. We must fill ourselves with selfless Prema. We must foster a spotless feeling. We must offer our life to God in tyāga. That is the sacred deed this Bali Cakravarti did. From that day to this, in the land of Kerala, they have kept this festival with these sacred feelings and with a fervent Bhakti and śraddhā.

The land of Kerala is very sacred; it used to abound in the beauty of nature. It used to be always bright and lively, rippling with laughter. All this beauty of nature is like a green festoon. Wherever one looks, it takes the form of a nature full of great beauty. That beauty is the very form of God. So God is beauty, Beauty is god. That is why three Avatāras came in the land of Kerala. It is a sacred place for God Himself to descend in person. We must make such sacred places fruitful with sacred feelings. In Kerala, Bhakti and prapatti abound. Though there have been some changes this way and that on the political road, a divine feeling keeps arising in every individual. Kerala is the birthplace of culture and saṃskāra. There may be a few people of some sort. But in Kerala the spiritual bent of mind is the very nature of the people. Even one who does not believe in God at all keeps thinking of God somehow, without his knowing it. In this way he keeps remembering God.
