Passage 8

In plain words

Where Shadow is, there light is. Only when we take up Rights and Responsibilities of this kind can we nourish these human values to the full. When human values are nourished with such intentions and with unity, Bhārata will become an ideal country indeed. Each person must develop the feeling, ‘This is my own work’. We must keep in view the nurture of our country. This must not be a journey only as far as ‘mine and my people’. The feeling ‘ours and our people’ must grow here. Only when we gather together unity, purity and divinity of this kind, this principle of the Ātma, can we nourish right values.

Enquiry into the Ātma and the blossoming of the mind: both these are most necessary. We must develop this blossoming of the mind. But today studies are growing more and more, while the mind is becoming very narrow. It is turning into a very cramped mind. No, no: we must cultivate a broad outlook. This is the essence of real education. The goal of education. We must reach this goal.

Whatever you have resolved to hold, hold it you have: stay just so until your resolve wins through. Whatever you have longed for, long for it you have: do not go away until your longing is fulfilled. Whatever you have asked for, ask for it you have: do not let go until what you asked is given.

This determination must be in man. In sacred matters like these, determination is most necessary for us. This is not for me; it is done for the sake of the world. Only when the whole country is well is our welfare bound up with the country. If one thinks ‘my joy, my comfort alone matters’, there is no use at all. So we must set the welfare of the country before us as our aim. We must enhance the distinction of sacred Bhārata.

Along with this Prajñāna we must join spiritual Prajñāna too. We must join these two together like negative and positive. Only when this union comes about do we gain the right Ānanda. We must not divide them, science apart and the spiritual apart. We must bring about the oneness of these two. All of us must stay united. We must foster satsaṅga. It is through satsaṅga itself that good feelings keep growing. It is through these good feelings themselves that we are able to do good deeds. That is why satsaṅga is very necessary for us today. But unfortunately, wherever we go, it is bad company, bad company, nothing but bad company. Einstein too said it many times. Tell me your company I shall tell you what you are. As your company is, so you will be.
