In plain words
Today we are readily cultivating bad company. We readily cultivate bad feelings. We readily cultivate bad intentions. We do not try in the least to cultivate good feeling and good intention. These bad habits close round us in a moment. But sacred feelings will not come, not in the least, however much we try. What is the reason? It is only that your saṅkalpa is not strong. Today science has no authority to enhance the wholeness of man's life. The spiritual alone has the authority to nourish this wholeness. That is why, first of all, the spiritual is most necessary for human values. Only when a seed is set in the earth and watered does it grow into a plant; set in a tin and watered, it rots. In the very same way, only when human values are set in the spiritual can they grow; if they fall into science alone they will not grow at all. So for human values to grow, the help called the spiritual is very necessary. Without that spiritual help, Human value become artificial human value; but what use comes from the artificial? Art is outside. Heart is inside. So in the heart … must grow. So first of all we must develop the spiritual feeling. That alone is our basis. That alone is the goal of life.
That itself, simply, is brotherhood of man, Fatherhood of god. These two we must develop. Bhakti: this is most necessary. If this devotion is lacking, it is nothing but ocean. We drown in it. What is our saṃsāra like? When the ocean was churned, first of all the hālāhala was born. Only after it did the amṛta come. In the same way, if we churn well what we call our life, Vairāgya must be born first of all. Only after it, what we call Ānanda: it is gained. Without Vairāgya, Ānanda does not come to us. So first we must develop Vairāgya. What does Deattachment mean? It is not leaving house and home, wife and children, and going off to the forest. To cast off wicked feeling is itself Vairāgya. That is real Vairāgya. We students must cultivate such a feeling and make the right effort to develop harmony and equality.
Students! Education that cannot develop humanness is merely like the howling of jackals in a burial ground. So first of all we must develop character. That is why they said, character is the hallmark of man. We must cultivate this purity. It comes to us only in sacred conduct. When the students in our institution develop certain kinds of practice, an example can be shown through them to the whole world.
So, students! Giving up your selfishness and self-interest in some measure, you must take up, with purity, deeds that are a support and a shelter to the wide world and to society.
