In plain words
This is not right. What is tyāga? It is not that, when you have something, we give it up and pray to God. That is not what tyāga means. To hand over to each what is his own: that is tyāga. Someone came and asked for a gift. We gave him money. But we think of it as having made a tyāga. No, no; we are giving him his own wealth. He put it into your hand at some time, on some day long ago. Were he a person who had not handed it over in that way, he could not come to you and hope for money. Yet even to hand his own money back to him, we hang back. Such a one is like a man who tries to dodge his debts. In just the same way, let us receive wealth, that is, the wealth of Jñāna, from God. The wealth received from Him must be offered back to Him alone. That is why those who were supreme devotees
Whatever heart You have given me, O Lord, that very heart I offer back to You, O glorious Form; what else could I truly bring for Your worship? I join my palms to You: do receive it, Lord.
said this. What You gave, that very thing I am giving to You. It is not something I have newly earned.
Students! Today the young take to many kinds of wrong roads and make their sacred, divine life unholy. Among the twenty-four lakh kinds of living beings, no creature has the desires that man has. Even for beasts, birds and the like, and for rākṣasas and the like, there is some limit to desires. But: jantūnāṃ narajanma durlabhaṃ. Men, who have received this sacred and fitting title, have desires beyond all bounds, more than rākṣasas. They have desires beyond all bounds, more than beasts and birds. Because of these very desires, man, who should receive happiness and Ānanda, man, who should give them, suffers unrest and sorrow. So reduce these desires and try to increase the desire for God. Little by little, keep reducing your delusion about the world. Vairāgya: to give up possessions and vehicles is not, by itself, Vairāgya.
To give up the evil feeling within one's feeling is tyāga, and that itself is yoga; it is not leaving wealth and wife and going off to the forest: the word of Sai is the true path.
So first of all we must check the evil feeling.
Just as Ātma-sākṣātkāra is needed, so too the punishing of oneself is needed. Today bad thoughts came to me. Chī! All these bad thoughts came from my food and my pastimes, so today I will not eat.
