In plain words
In the same way, in Bhārata, the people of Bhārata examined this authority of the Veda and the greatness of the Veda through research. It was the people of Bhārata who researched and examined it. It is not because the people of Bhārata researched it and examined it that one can say this Veda is the Veda of the whole world. The Veda is packed close, filling the whole world. In other countries it may not be there. Names of this kind may not be there. In the same way, when Newton, a man of whatever country, said that the earth has the power of gravitation, the people of Bhārata cannot say it has not, can they? So too, others cannot say that this Veda the people of Bhārata researched and set down is not there. People of other countries too honour this Veda very greatly. A man called Max Muller wrote many commentaries on this Veda and examined in many ways where it came from and its whole history. Night and day he went on learning it in many ways. He went on studying it. He went on trying to find its right meaning for himself. He poured out his whole life for the Veda alone. That is why the name Max Muller went and he came to be called Mokṣa Muller. The faith that foreigners had, the people of Bhārata do not have. This itself is the misfortune that has come in today. From the day this misfortune entered Bhārata, Bhārata, which was bright and gay with the green festoons of ever-recurring festivity, Bhārata, the very form of Annapūrṇā, has had to writhe, crying "Annamo Rāmacandrā".
The whole responsibility for this is the brahmins' own. Had they nourished it rightly, this sorry state would not have come. At least from today they must open their eyes and try to nourish it in the right way. In our schools, from primary school to college, all the children are learning the Veda. Today there is no one to give them zeal and encouragement. The reason for this: it is because the Veda was put into the hands of one class of gurus that it has fallen into such a plight. Saying is one thing, doing is another. That is why this Vijñāna of the Veda is dwindling among the people. They do not do as they say. That is why this unbelief grows strong among the people in this way.
Embodiments of Prema! Every person must bind himself by a vow to nourish this Veda in the right way. The welfare of the country and the good of the world rest on the Veda alone. That is why they said, "In whatever measure anyone thinks of Him, in that measure alone is He." For those who have the faith that He is, He is. For those whose faith is that He is not, He is not. "He is" and "He is not" belong only to our throat, not to God. So it is these brahmins themselves who are the cause of the Veda's gradual decline. One can say any amount. But one must do it and show it. All these people must bind themselves by a vow and make the effort it takes to nourish its growth. If it goes on another ten years, twenty years, even they will not be able to save it.
