Passage 8

In plain words

Even a rich man, at the time he leaves this body, does not take even a handful of earth with him. What goes along are just two. Merit, and the grace of God. We must win Dharma and good name. Living in the world is impermanent. Youth and wealth are impermanent. Wife, sons and the rest are impermanent. All these are impermanent. Fame is not something that comes through another. It is not something lost through others. You may think, “Swami has gained fame through us.” Through you alone fame may come. Through you alone fame may go. That is a great mistake. Fame does not come through anyone. It is not something that goes through anyone. It has come from Me alone. My Ānanda has come from Me alone. It has not come from anyone else. For every man, his fame and ill fame come only from his own conduct, not from others. They are not imported. So only when we develop good conduct, join good company and do good deeds will good fame come to us. If you keep to bad company, evil thoughts, evil feelings and evil deeds, how will fame come to you? Ill fame alone will be your crown. Rather than living while everyone says “bad, bad”, it is better to die having ten people call you good. So man, the man who takes on the form of the Praṇava that is everywhere, trusts the very sound of the Praṇava to be his in-breath and out-breath and lives it, must not enter this evil path. All that the Sāmaveda has said: what is it! The Paramātma who fills everything dwells in you too. He dwells as the form of sound. There is no place without Him. Hoping that you will believe this truth, that there is no place that is not His, make this Praṇava your upāsanā and through it become one with this Praṇava, and blessing you, I end My discourse.
