In plain words
Our duty is to drink in their essence, which is rasa itself, and through that to bring back to life these Vedas that are fading again. For this we must take the vow and set them on the right path.
Human life is noble, gracious and virtuous. In such daily life, ‘jantūnāṃ narajanma durlabhaṃ’: having taken this human birth, so hard to gain, if we do not listen at all to true words, nor inquire, and make life worthless, that is not right action. We must develop Bhakti for God. With no Bhakti at all, all this learning is worthless. Merely uttering them is of no use to us. We must grow Bhakti for God. We may say all we want with our throats, like the striking of a bell. No, no; nāda must come. We must regard nāda itself as the Veda. We must merge in nāda. That itself is our samādhi. We must hold that samatva in mind. We must foster samatva. We must share samatva. That is the chief duty of man.
Embodiments of Prema! Above all, two qualities must be in man: Bhakti and tyāga. Without tyāga, Bhakti does not come. This itself is na karmaṇā na prajayā dhanena tyāgenaike amṛtatvamānasuḥ; so if you would experience this amṛtatva, it is tyāga, tyāga..... Selfishness and self-interest: by these two alone man is bound. The moment you give up selfishness, there is no bondage. Life lasts but a moment; it is like snow that melts away. All our possessions are like passing clouds. For their sake we go through such toils; do not, at the very last, waste your divine life. In whatever service it may be, you must take up tyāga, serve others, win the approval of society, and become one who enjoys the joy of society. For years on end it is udyoga, udyoga... What is this udyoga with no yoga in it? You have a family. You have a certain responsibility. There is duty. You may work at a job. But when it is needed, we must give up even the job and take part in the service of the country. If I give up everything, who will look after my family? If you have not even that much faith, how will your family prosper? Will He who sowed the seedlings not water them?
“I have read the books, I have looked through all the śāstras, I have learnt peerless learning,” you say: why this pride of yours? unable to fold both hands and worship the Paramātma with Bhakti, these present-day kinds of learning, every one, are worthless now, O man!
So, our learning, our property and possessions, all of these, if there is in truth no faith in God: just as earth goes back into the ground, we fall prey to these states.
