Passage 15

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

This alone we must believe as our conviction. Without such differences, as people who all belong to the human race, and without quarrels of any kind, all taking part in this service, we must try to nourish our ancient wealth held in the ancient tradition, and Dharma.

This service itself is the great sādhana. Leaving this sādhana and saying we are doing some little sādhana or other, he keeps turning the japa beads, and who knows where the mind keeps wandering. Do not try to do such meaningless sādhanas. They go into dhyāna. Who knows where that dhyāna goes; it keeps going off to some washerman's house or barber's house. Rather than doing this dhyāna with these bad qualities, make a fitting effort to serve people well. When you yourself are God, whom else are you to do dhyāna on? So we must grow this broad feeling. This is a vast world. In this vast world, how shameful it is to have narrow feelings! In a vast world, vast feelings must come. The day these vast feelings come in us, that very day we can attain divinity.

Today, through the pūjās or dhyāna or japa we do, we are narrowing God. We make God, whose form is the universe, into small photos, put a frame on it, place it in the pūjā, and saying God is right there, go there and bow: how much does that belittle divinity! God will never be caught by your vows. If you ask how today's devotees are, they are sunk in that much Ajñāna. If you ask in what way they are: O God, if a lottery of ten lakhs comes to me today, I will give a thousand rupees. This fellow takes ten lakh rupees from God and would give God a thousand rupees: say, how great a folly that is! How will God, having taken a thousand rupees from this fellow, give him ten lakhs? And there are other perverse and twisted desires. Swami. If I get a job, next month I will come and give You all my hair. To give this worthless fur and ask for lofty desires: what foolishness! There is nothing you need give God. There is no God who takes, standing apart as someone else. Both are you yourself. These are nothing but your delusions. As long as this delusion is in you, you cannot see Brahman. So little by little make the fitting effort to remove this delusion. They say, ‘We are doing sādhana for Ātma-sākṣātkāra.’ The Ātma is present everywhere, manifest. The sādhana you do is not for the Ātma. It is for removing the anātma. If you remove the anātma, the Ātma is right there. So make the fitting effort, that we may remove this anātma. If this anātma is to go, it is not to be had by any other path except through service alone.
