Passage 14

In plain words

each Sevā Dal a president: without anything of this kind, set as office holder the best one in that very group that does the service, and the service work among them will grow with great harmony. Today office bearers have gone beyond all limit. Wherever a meeting is held, it is all office bearers; of those who do the work, no one is to be seen there. One a president, one a vice president, one a convener, a coordinator, a committee: all sorts of these committees are growing needlessly. Look anywhere you like. Wherever a minister is coming, there are more police than people. In just that way, in our gatherings there are too many office bearers. For whose sake this office bearers meeting was held, I cannot understand. Office bearers must be reduced little by little. There is a proverb in Telugu. As the people grow, the buttermilk grows thin, they say. If there are some five or six people, you can add thick curd. If the people become many, they pour in water. In the same way, in our organisations too, if the office bearers grow too many, all the work grows thin.

Next, I hope the World Council will keep these kinds of arrangements and alterations rightly in view and bring this onto the right path. Truly, I have no connection of any kind with this organisation. Between Me and you there is a close bond. No one can put this away. This is not something brought about through anyone. So within the organisation all must come together in harmony and, with a brotherly feeling, consult one another and make the fitting effort to set things right. There must be no differences of opinion of any kind between one and another. If there are feelings of that kind, we cannot develop the organisation. Someone must set it right and make the fitting effort to bring the two of them together. But one thing: though there are so many thousands, nothing like this has grown anywhere till today. Some selfishness and self-interest cannot but be there. All are children of the one mother. A poet keeps saying:

We are birds of one nest, we are flowers of one vine, we are children of one mother, we are offspring of one race; why should there be quarrels among us?

So no one must give room to differences of opinion of any kind with one another. We are all citizens of one race. That is the human race. We must keep that race in view and step forward. We are all human beings and nothing else. For us there is no discrimination of race, religion, caste or colour. What all religions agree on, that alone is our religion.
