In plain words
Without charity and Dharma, without compassion and Satya, without good conduct in the mind, the man who runs riot with evil ways finds no happiness on this earth or in the world beyond.
Embodiments of Prema!
The word ‘dharaṇi’ has arisen from the root ‘dhṛt’. ‘Dharaṇi’ is that which has bound Dharma upon all the worlds alike. It is that which holds up the whole universe, all alike. ‘Dharmo viśvasya jagataḥ pratiṣṭhā’: that is, it has itself decreed, ‘This is Dharma, this is Dharma.’ ‘Dharme sarva pratiṣṭhitam’: that is, it has the authority to declare of itself, ‘This is Dharma.’ This Dharma cannot be known by direct perception, nor by inference, nor in the end even by reasoning. Only the Veda, whose proof is the word itself, has the authority to make it known.
Dharma and Mokṣa both lie beyond the senses; the Buddhi cannot reach them
What is the Veda? ‘Vedaitīti vedaḥ’: the Veda is that which makes every matter known in full. Dhanurveda, Āyurveda, Nāṭyaveda, Sāmaveda: in many such ways a word is set before ‘Veda’ and spoken with it, and so it has gone on teaching. So it becomes clear that the Veda is what teaches each subject according to the science of the word that stands before it. Take the Nāṭyaveda, for example. The word before ‘Veda’ is nāṭya. So this Nāṭyaveda is what teaches the science of dance. Āyurveda: because the word āyuḥ stands before ‘Veda’, the science that speaks of life came to be called Āyurveda. ‘Veda’ means that which makes known.
