Passage 5

In plain words

Art is outside. Heart is inside. When games are played and songs are sung for health and joy, they reach the Heart. People cannot recognise the truth that all this Art has come from the Heart. That is why they fall into weakness of mind and into misery. If you have earned the strength of the Ātma and the strength of the mind, you have won every strength there is. But what is the aim of all this learning, all these arts? Our aim is to win fitting renown for the land in which we were born and for the mother from whose womb we were born: for that motherland and that mother. Unfortunately, because today we fix our aim on material wealth alone, we are falling low. You know: Money comes and goes. If we go after money, we lose character.

What young students need is sacrifice, love of country and Bhakti for God. These three alone are vital. It is because we are filled today with selfishness, self-interest and Ahaṅkāra that humanness is so far from us. Today these three, Bhakti for God, love of country and sacrifice, must be made to blossom in the country and be made manifest. To achieve them, one must sacrifice the body one has called ‘mine, mine’, one’s own feelings and one’s own comfort. Young men with such a spirit of sacrifice, young men of adamant resolve, must grow in great numbers. Only then shall we have the chance to drive away the unrest that has spread over the country. We must not become volunteers who take money and shout in the bazaars. We must not become selfish men full of Ahaṅkāra.

Life is to be offered to the country and to God alone!

Today man is selling his Ātma and travelling on a wrong path. We must recognise that it is our culture of Bhārata that fosters the courage to stand up to injustice, wrongdoing, misconduct, untruth and the like. We must believe that the Bhakti of the people of Bhārata is the power born of the yajña called kṣamā.
