Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

In the end the whole treasury of this country goes off to foreign lands. The British all went on spending our money for our people. But today all our leaders are spending our money on them. Should this fellow die, all that money goes to them. In that way many crores of wealth have gone. That is why Gandhiji said: ‘Use only the goods of our own country; do not use the goods of other countries.’ We must love our country; but we must not criticise another country.

As dear as our country is to us, so dear is their country to them

We must not nurse hatred against any country. If each people goes on loving its own country, there will be no hatred of any kind. You were born in Bhārata, you drink this country's water. You eat this country's food. Yet you love the Western countries. Such people are traitors to their country. We have not seen the other countries, we have not seen their ways or their conditions, we do not know their aims and ideals; yet we love them. If someone came and said, ‘Your mother is like this, your father is like that,’ would anyone keep quiet! We turn on such people. In just the same way, when someone criticises our country, we must certainly stand up to it. Only where there is love of country does individual character grow. National Character and Individual Character are to man like the head and the feet. The young have great need of these two. One's mother may be ugly; she may be poor. A different young woman who is beautiful will not become one's mother, will she! ‘I have no need of golden Laṅkā, Lakṣmaṇa! I want Ayodhyā, the land of my birth,’ said Rāma. Pride in one's own is good, but there must be no false pride. We must not hold this false pride and criticise another country. This is very important.
