In plain words
That is why it will not try to bite everyone,’ she said. Who has the power to escape the bond of karma? Did not Satya Hariścandra, ever holding to Satya, serve as keeper of the cremation ground for the sake of his word? Did not Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, taking birth as Rāma, suffer many troubles at Rāvaṇa's hands? She went on teaching in this way. No one escapes the fruit of karma. ‘So do not harm that snake,’ she said. ‘This is nothing but God's will; it is not the snake's doing. All beings are forms of God! When that fruit of karma has ripened, He takes the life away in one way or another. He need not come Himself in person. So the one who killed is not the snake. The one who died is not my son. I am suffering through the delusion that I am the body. This boy is not my son. By how many karmas is that child born, and by how many karmas does he die?’ When she spoke of such matters of Vedānta, the hunter's head spun. ‘I have no need of all this. First I will kill that snake, and then I will listen to your Vedānta,’ he said. Then that mother began again with ‘I will give you a fine teaching’: ‘You are a hunter. You have killed an animal with your bow. Did you kill that animal, or did your arrow kill it? The arrow is a tool. It did not kill. Only because you let it fly did it kill the animal. So the snake did not kill. It happened by God's will. So the snake is not at fault in the least.’ Swami has to call Narasimhan, who is outside. For that, Swami can tell anyone to call him. It is not that only one particular person must be sent. So, in God's creation, all are living beings! God can command anyone and tell him to bring that person. In the same way He told the snake to kill that boy, and the snake came and took his life. In God's creation, there is no escaping the fruit of karma.
Is it in your power to cross karma, O man? Is it in your power to cross karma? Does not the rich man become a beggar in an instant? Does not even a scholar turn into a beast? When a stick itself becomes a snake and comes to bite, karma alone is the cause, karma alone the root. (Is it in your power…) Whether you dip it in a little spring or in the vast ocean, the pot holds only as much water as its size; want as you may, it will not hold more. (Is it in your power…)
