God is in the three worlds. He is in the three times. We must try to establish such divinity at the level of the heart.
Today we earn many kinds of wealth through our actions. When actions themselves are unsteady, how … wealth, the fruit of action, steady? The Bhagavad Gītā said that all these are impermanent, all are unreal. Divinity, eternal Satya, is the One alone. Today we are forgetting such divinity. We feel just as our mind has come to believe something, to worship something, to trust it. It is merely as the saying goes, Yad bhāvaṃ tad bhavati: we are able to receive the results according to our feelings. Outwardly we may say things in many ways. We may put some on show. But it is not possible to hide your feeling from God. One may say, ‘I am a supreme devotee.’ One may speak all the words needed to please God in every way. But we must enquire whether our own heart is content with us, whether our own conscience is content with us. Annamācārya prayed to God in just this way and wrote many songs saying, ‘You alone are my all.’ At the very last he recognised his own truth. At once he was transformed, seeing that he was deceiving God with words. We cannot please God with our books or with our words. It is not possible to please God with our studies, with our scholarship, with our cleverness or with our power of intellect. Annamācārya said, ‘In whatever measure anyone thinks of You, in that measure alone are You.’ O God, with whatever one feeling a person thinks of You, in that measure alone You are. You do not go beyond it. However big a vessel we take and dip into the ocean, only that much water enters that vessel.
Though you dip it in a little spring or fill it from any number of oceans, as big as the pot, friend, so much the water; however much you want it, more will not come, friend. Is it in your power to cross karma? O man! Is it in your power to cross karma? Though you recite the ghana-pāṭhas, though you worship the family gods, though you go off to the deep forests, though you perform harsh tapas, is it in your power to cross karma? O man! Is it in your power to cross karma?
